External Hard Drives traditionally provide data security against hardware failures, software viruses, and maybe theft if you encrypt your data. However, in face of threats like fire and flood, these storage solutions don’t really stand a chance.
Sentry Group has teamed up with Maxtor to develop the first ever fire resistant and waterproof USB hard drive that is especially designed to survive in a fire up to 1550F degrees for 30 minutes and underwater for up to 24 hours. Sentry took care of the physical protection, while Maxtor provided the drive and backup software against fatal crash and trojan horse attack. The bundled software is called SafetyDrill – a new bare metal system restore feature allows for a nearly instantaneous restoration of an entire system. This is definitely too cool to miss, even if the MSRP is set at $259.99 for 80GB and $319.99 for 160GB.
If you don’t feel like getting an integrated solution, Sentry also offers a $520 safe with a USB pass-through and storage for over a hundred CD/DVDs, probably some flash drives and documents.

If King Tutankhamen were alive today, I’m sure he’d love be buried with this very special PC case mod inspired by his famous self. The EgyptMod PC created and constructed by Chris Kramer draws heavily on the ancient Egyptian graphics and is engraved with intricate hieroglyphs and decked up with fake jewels to lend it the entire splendor befitting the ancient ruler. The case is covered with 68 pounds of hand-carved limestone tiles with turquoise, calcite, lapis, lazuli, coral and carnelian detail depicting the best of 18th Dynasty sylphs while a mesmerizing brass, malachite and verisite covered Eye of Ra detail bespeaks the 200 hours of manual labor put into crafting this fine specimen!

When Daniel Day-Lewis took a break from acting in 1999 to spend some time learning to be a cobbler (talk about your actorly clichés), the maestro he reportedly apprenticed himself to was Florence’s Stefano Bemer. It’s not hard to see why. Bemer, who once worked at Gucci, is a master cobbler, and he goes to great lengths to make truly individual shoes: He’s been known to twist his own linen cord for stitching soles, and to use some unusual dyes—such as red wine—to color his leathers. Bemer also uses a wide range of skins, including toad and camel, so the only limit to what you can get is your imagination. Well, that and your budget. Bemer’s bespoke shoes, which take about three months to turn around, start at $2,000, but he also makes some equally unusual ready-to-wear items. Of course, if casual alligator shoes with rubber soles aren’t your thing, custom kicks may be worth the wait.
Time to make: 40 hours total over three months
Price: From $2,000
