Discover The Mysterious Chinese “Long Horn” Miao Tribe

Inhabiting southwest China, the Miao minority group is well known for their elaborate silver jewelry. Throughout centuries of migration, the Miao have been divided into various tribes. The Long Horn Miao is one of them.

The reason why the Long Horn Miao are called “long lorn” is that they make a big wooden horn that is used to decorate their hair. During holidays and important ceremonies, women twist hair left by their ancestors and black wool around the horn to form a large headdress that usually weighs 3-6 kilograms.

In a village called Soujia at 1,800 meters above sea level, there are about 5,000 Long Horn Miao people. They lead a simple life that has not changed much during the past several centuries.

The Long Horn Miao build their houses out of couch grass and dirt. Men farm and go hunting, while women spend their time on spinning, weaving cloth, making batik, and doing embroidery.

They love and worship pheasants, because they believe their ancestors found corn seeds and survived in the remote mountainous areas thanks to pheasants. Examining their colorful garments, you will find the beautiful designs imitate the feathers of a pheasant. The women’s black felt aprons and white leg wrappings are exactly like the bird’s breast and legs.

Why do the local people enjoy adorning their hair with a large horn? Legend has it that in ancient times when their king was killed in war, they would place arrows and bows in their hair and swear to avenge the king. This custom was kept for long time. Later they formed the habit of decorating their hair with a big wooden horn.

Women keep their loose hair every time they comb their hair. Then they will give this as a dowry to their daughters. In a local museum, there is a notable hair bun made of hair from five generations of women. It weighs 6 kilograms.

A long horn Miao headdress looks like the number 8. It is about 15 cm high, with both ends dropping down to the shoulders. It takes at least one hour to prepare this large, complicate headdress.

Soujia has been attracting people from all over the world since the mid-1990’s. The tourists are fascinated by the colorful culture of the Long Horn Miao, and also appalled by their poverty. In a local home, you can’t find a good piece of furniture, let alone a TV set, a washing machine, or any silver jewelry.

Guardalavaca Cuba.

Guardalavaca beach offers a perfect combination of fine sand and sea, marked by the neighborhood of the mountains and the green one of the vegetation; characterize its environment.

The beach of Guardalavaca, featured among the most emblematic of the East of Cuba, was even ignored in some maps of the region for few centuries.

Valleys and hills combine with unique vegetation and a fauna including the national bird Tocororo, woodpeckers, parrots, cateyes, macaws, jutas congas, the aboriginal manatee and even wild horses.

A more realistic story links the origins of Guardalavaca’s name to the warning that emitted the natives before the arrival of the looters that came from the sea, where the shout of “Guard the Cow” (Guardalavaca) notified to all of the danger that represented.

Home of the main aboriginal settlements of Cuba, its beaches are of a blue turquoise that hypnotizes us with the smooth movement of their water. Guardalavaca defines nature, culture, history, relaxation, beach and recreation in a single name.

Beach Guardalavaca is rich in history and myths, place of link of Europe with America since Christopher Columbus sailed his water and he put in communication to the world with the aboriginal culture of the natives “the Araucos”.

The North Peninsula State Recreation Area also offers free entry and this is 900 hectare of pristine natural beauty comprising two miles of coast and beaches. It is a popular place for surf fishing and sea turtle spotting.
